If you have a ChampionChip from a race you participated in, please send it to the event or return it directly to us. The event is charged to replace any losses, so please always return your chip! Here's how:

• 1. Put the chip in a padded envelope (or wrap it securely inside bubble wrap to make the envelope thick. In a regular envelope, the chip will be lost in the Post Office machinery!
• 2. Add a quick note telling us your name and which event your chip came from.
• 3. Send it to: GSRS, POB 990, Newport, NH 03773
• 4. Be sure to have enough postage on the envelope. Best bet is to take it to the window at the Post Office and have them check it.

What is a ChampionChip?

The ChampionChip is a small plastic disk containing a miniature transponder. For running races, the ChampionChip is often just attached to the runner's shoelace and can also be attached to an ankle bracelet for triathlons.

How does this system work?

The basis for the ChampionChip timing system is the high-frequency-identification system (TIRIS) from Texas Instruments. For race timing, special antennas are cast in thin tartan mats and the mats are placed at the finish line and other timing locations. Each time a ChampionChip passes over the mat it activates and sends its unique identification number to the reading antennas in the mats. The data is then stored with the corresponding time in a computer. A ChampionChip system with a 4-meter wide mat can score more than 1,500 athletes per minute without missing anyone!

What makes the ChampionChip work?

Each ChampionChip contains a miniature transponder with its own unique seven-character identification code. The transponder is encased in a waterproof capsule. The transponder is passive until moving into the magnetic field generated by the ChampionChip antenna mats. The magnetic field activates the ChampionChip's energy coil, producing an electric current that energizes the transponder. The transponder then transmits its unique identification code to the reading antennas located in the same mats. The scoring is completed instantly, so there is no need for ropes and lanes and long lines of runners waiting to be processed. There are no batteries to run down, so the chip is ready for a lifetime of use.

Where has the ChampionChip system been used?

Since it's first commercial use at the 1994 Berlin Marathon, ChampionChip systems have timed thousands of events around the world including the 1998 USAT National Championships, Los Angeles Marathon, Boston Marathon and the Disney Marathon. In the 1999 season, more than 3,500 events worldwide will be using the ChampionChip technology.
